I never thought I could be so in love with a place so far out of my comfort zone.
Sole Hope Uganda is that place.
This is the kind of place where critters run free and flexibility is a survival skill. A place where time seems to stand still and run in fast forward at the same time. It’s one of the hardest and most challenging places you will ever be, and yet it is equally rewarding. Through all the joy and all heartache at Sole Hope, you will learn how to love people like you never have before.
I’ve had the amazing opportunity to intern with Sole Hope in Jinja Uganda for the last few months. At first, I was freaking out. I barely knew anything about the organization, and I can’t stand feet or anything resembling a maggot. At Sole Hope, we treat people’s feet and remove parasites called jiggers. It is so much more than that on so many levels. I’m a firm believer in the fact that if you are meant to be somewhere, then somehow you will be ok with things you aren’t normally ok with. At least that is how it has been for me.
I’ve experienced the heartache of watching a child have more than 700 jiggers removed from their feet knowing that I would never be able to comfort them in pain but I needed to try. I’ve had my heartbroken time and time again when the patients I’ve formed relationships with at outreach go home knowing I’ll never see them again. I’ve sat with staff members and have learned how before they worked for Sole Hope they had little to nothing.
You will find that life here isn’t easy, in fact, many days I find myself crying due to heartache from what I see around me. But you will also find a life that is worth more than any price tag. You will experience a life where relationships matter. Kids love to become your friend! Communities are empowered, and thousands of people learn how to live a life without the pain of jiggers.
If you want to spend your time with an organization that makes a difference in people’s lives, one that empowers people and shows love and kindness no matter what their story is, then Sole Hope is the place to go. As my time comes to an end my heart breaks. Sure, there have been some bumps along the way and some bouts of sickness. However, there have also been new experiences I never thought imaginable, and it has enriched my life, leaving me with a story of Hope to share with everyone I encounter.
